A Tesco plan to remove 1800 jobs at its bakeries in shops throughout the UK could influence STAFF in Caithness. The supermarket titan is just not divulging details of the areas and says changes will solely take effect later this year.
A spokesperson for the corporation stated big stores with bakeries will be impacted; however, it couldn’t say if that included Wick and Thurso. “
The retailer will transform 58 of its bakeries to finish pre-baked products on site. Bakeries at 257 locations will remain the same, with a further 201 continuing to supply some products which are produced there.
Based on Tesco, the step is being taken as sales of bagels, wraps, and flatbreads grow and the demand for traditional loaves drops.
The plan will mean 1816 staff shall be “at risk of redundancy”, though the firm points out that different roles might be offered from the “many 1000’s of vacancies we will have available throughout our store chains between now and May”.
Jason Tarry, the UK and Ireland chief, stated: “We have to adapt to changing customer demand and tastes for bakery products to continue to offer clients a market-leading bakery array in store. We know this shall be very difficult for colleagues who are affected, and our priority is to assist them through this process.”
The main union representing Tesco employees, Usdaw, described the reports of job reductions as “devastating” for workers and stated many of those at risk are skilled workers.
